Protego in Hogwarts Legacy is a defensive combat Spell that shields the player from enemy attacks. Protego is one of the most basic spells in the game and 1 of 8 Essential spells. Blocking enemy attacks with Protego is crucial to have for any master wizard or witch.
How to Get Protego
Luckily players won’t have to wait too long before learning this powerful spell.
Protego is simply learned during The Path to Hogwarts quest at the beginning of the game. Players will have plenty of opportunities to practice Protego and Stupefy on statue enemies before arriving at Hogwarts.
How to Use
Normal Protego
Press and hold the Triangle button (Y for Xbox) when two orange circles surround your character’s head for a successful Protego. Then let go of the button to perform Stupefy. Stupefy will stun an enemy for a few moments after being hit.
Enemies have varied attack timings making the Protego time window different from enemy to enemy.
Red circles that surround your character’s head are attacked that cannot be blocked with Protego. Instead, these types of attacks must be dodged.
Perfect Protego
Perfect Protego is performed by blocking at the last moment before getting hit. This window is shown on the screen when the orange circle turns into a yellow ring.
To help time the Perfect Protego, players can watch the two orange circles combine slowly until they overlap into 1 yellow ring.
Talent Synergies
Talents let you further customize your combat style by enhancing specific spells in Hogwarts Legacy. Use the talents below to further enhance your use of Protego.
Protego Absorption – Build your Ancient Magic Meter while blocking with Protego and more meter with Perfect Protego. Great for building offense while performing defense.
Protego Expertise – Launch two damage-dealing projectiles at your enemies with a Perfect Protego. Another great tool for turning defense into offense.
Protego Mastery – Perform Perfect Protego to release an area of effect blast that damages enemies and breaks any color shield.
Trait Synergies
Traits are extra enhancements that you can weave into each of your 6 pieces of Gear: Handwear, Facewear, Headwear, Neckwear, Cloaks and Robes, Outfit. Use the following traits on your pieces of Gear to get the most out of Protego.
Unforgivable I, Unforgivable II, Unforgivable III
Although this trait doesn’t directly affect Protego, it does synergize with its natural follow-up, Stupefy. This trait increases damage to cursed enemies with Unforgivable III giving the highest increase.
Combine with the Stunning Curse talent to add the curse effect to Stupefy.
Spell Combos
Protego -> Stupefy
Successfully block then counter with an attack of your own. Do this by holding Triangle for Protego, then releasing after a successful block to perform Stupefy.
