Gear item mastery activations were introduced as part of the Gear Mastery system for Ghost of Tsushima: Legends on August 20, 2021. After activation, players will complete a series of gear-specific challenges to increase from Level 110 to the new max of Level 120.
How to Activate the Mastery Challenge in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends
The gear item mastery activation is the first step in leveling an item to 120 by activating its first mastery challenge.
- Select the “Character” from the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends main menu
- Select “Gear” from the Character screen
- Then find the gear item that you want to activate the Mastery Challenge
- Then press Square to select the “Modifications” menu of the gear item
- Navaigate to the last (5th) icon then press and hold X to activate the mastery challenge
Note: Activating the mastery challenge for an item requires a Level 110 Item and
2000 Essence.
- A secondary prompt will pop up to ask if you meant to perform the gear item mastery activation
- Press X again and now the item has its first Mastery Challenge
Complete Gear Item Mastery Challenges to Get Level 120 Gear
Mastery challenges in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends are the objectives that a player must complete in order to level a gear item past Level 110. Completing a mastery challenge will raise the gear level of an item by 2, meaning an item will need 5 complete mastery challenges to reach Level 120.

Adding a 2nd Perk to Level 120 Gear
Once you have finished leveling gear to 120, you are now able to add a 2nd perk to your gear item. You must use a purified gear item to roll for your 2nd perk. Similar to rerolling properties and perks, rolling the 2nd perk is randomized.
