Why You Need an NVMe for Your PS5 (Even the Disc Edition)

The next generation is here and you’re ready to transfer your Playstation 4 library over. Not so fast bud, you may want to check your hard drive space before moving it all over.

Sony have release two models of the Playstation 5: a standard edition with a disc drive for $499 and a digital edition for $399. Both models of the Playstation 5 come with an 825 GB SSD, much smaller than the 1 GB found in the new Xbox machines. Abo

Currently average PS4 game uses between 50 GB and 80 GB of hard drive space. With only 667.2 GB of effective space, the average gamer is looking at about 10-15 games before needing to upgrade their storage. And that number plummets when you include games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that take up 250 GB alone.

While it may not be a problem for many gamers who play only a handful of games, those who have huge PS4 and PS5 libraries will have to choose which games to keep on their SSD.

What about Disc Model PS5 Owners?

If the Playstation 5 is anything like the Playstation 4, gamers who opted for a console with a disc reader will run into storage issues.

Owners with physical copies of their games will still need to download the complete game with the disc being used as their proof of purchase.
